This university athletic complex houses everything from a 6-lane, 25-yard competition swimming pool to an indoor 1/8-mile track. When the weather cooperates, the 1/4-mile outdoor track next door is a great addition. Like most university guest policies, non-student visitors seeking access to the center are, technically, supposed to show up with an enrolled co-ed as a "sponsor." But exceptions are made for guests of local hotels. We recently returned to this fantastic facility to confirm it is allowing non-members to workout. Ten bucks is the going rate, but admission is no sweat.
Finding the complex can be tricky, so we have included directions in place of our usual witty description of the center's innards. Suffice to say, the place has everything you will need for a complete workout.
Directions: East on Volker Blvd.; south on Oak St.; east on 50th St.; south on Cherry; park in the first lot on the right in the metered spaces. Walk east across the street and north of the outdoor track (track will be on your right); the Recreation Center is adjacent to the track. Proceed up the stairs and down the hallway to your left; the check-in counter will be at the corner on your right. See, it is quite the treasure hunt, but there is gold at the end of this rainbow, okay, maybe silver!
Towels and locks are provided for use.
The nicest pool without
The nicest pool without having to go way out into the suburbs. Indoor track is the best I have found any where in the city - 8 laps to the mile.
