Richard Walker's Pancake House (Downtown)
San Diego, CA 92101
Area: Downtown/Coronado
Hugely popular in Chicago, this pancake house now welcomes San Diegans. While this place is hardly a light eater refuge, we know that many athletic-minded travelers like to reward themselves with a big breakfast and this place delivers. There are a handful of more sensible menu items, but few are low calorie. Order wisely to avoid a calorie explosion. The space is casual, light and airy and there is outdoor seating.
Since hearty eats are plentiful, we'll highlight the more sensible options. Canadian bacon (lean ham) is a great protein option as is the smoked ham. Order an egg or two on the side and top it with some salsa for more light protein. Seasonal fruit, oatmeal and dry cereal along with the wheat germ pancakes (request a short stack), may also please healthy eaters. Beware that nearly everything comes with a big dollop of whipped butter, so tell your server "no thank you" to that. Now for those who just finished a marathon or other distance race and want to go all out, consider the baked apple pancake. It will serve 2-3 eaters and is quite the experience. Omelets, waffles, pancakes, crepes come in various flavors. This is a big menu.
