Though considered by some to be airport hotels, Sheraton and the neighboring Beverly Heritage sit approximately three miles beyond the immediate vicinity of the runways (and our other recommended Airport properties) on the southwestern edge of Milpitas. Likely its most unique feature, Sheraton's outdoor swimming pool was designed with two painted lane-stripes, creating a viable lap swimming option. However, the water box is not heated during the winter months and its length is only 50-feet (despite Sheraton's "Olympic-sized" proclamation on its website). Still, having any on-site option is a rare treat for our fish-like friends. Heading back indoors, Sheraton's 2nd floor gym is a cheerfully bright space with a few moderately appealing cardio machines, abdominal balls, and 5-50 lbs. dumbbell set. This sweat option would receive higher marks from us if the equipment was Precor, Life Fitness or StarTrac. The newer True apparatus supplied (with personal televisions attached) are better than average, but not fantastic. Pedals straps on either of the bikes would be helpful. Muscle-pumpers may find themselves longing for weight machines, barbells and the like. If so, plan on a ten minute drive to 24 Hour Fitness Super Sport ($20). Joggers should skip the treadmills and head outdoors to the Guadalupe River Trail. Confirm directions with the front desk, but if you head out the door to the right along Barber St., cross McCarthy Blvd. (through the stoplight), and continue to the end, you'll notice the path somewhat elevated on the other side of a chain-link fence. Veer to the right to find an opening in the fence. Judging by the frequent passers-by, lunchtime appears to be quite popular for local workers. Sheraton's 229 rooms (and the rest of the hotel) underwent a recent renovation that enhanced the ambiance and luxury level of the property. Now, a contemporary and modern vibe is palpable as soon as you enter the front doors. Guest quarters' best features include the amazingly comfortable Sweet Sleeper beds, flat-panel televisions and large windows. We dislike having to pay for high-speed internet access, and Sheraton unfortunately charges for such--likely in an attempt to motivate guests to upgrade to the "Club level" where online service is complimentary along with breakfasts and evening snacks. Bottom Line: Choose Sheraton over Beverly Heritage unless booking a room at the latter saves $40/night or more.
