• Out and back paved running through small campus and college athletic facilities

    * Start/Finish at Market St and San Carlos St

    * Run East down San Carlos and through campus after crossing 4th St

    * Turn R on 10th St after passing the 50-meter lap pool

    * Follow 10th to the 400-meter track (not overly impressive, but the oval gets the job done)

    * After your laps around the track, head back the way you came

    Total = approx. 4-mile route

  • Near the baseball fields and tennis courts (about a mile south of SJSU campus), the SJSU track is a 400-meter oval for those interested in a measured run or sprint session. The track itself is a bit worn, but still works out well. See our "Campus Run" map for more detailed location information. Plenty of parking available.

  • In how many cities are you able to run along a paved path that stretches through the heart of downtown, beside an airport runway, and along popular commercial districts? The Guadalupe River Trail is convenient and popular with the local running crowd and travelers staying in hotels along it. Accessing the fairly flat path is simple if staying at many of our recommended downtown San Jose and Airport hotels. The path is insulated in a few areas by dense bushes and trees, so be alert and only walk/jog during daylight hours.

  • This urban route follows a mostly paved (one gravel portion) path across 18 miles. The most convenient access point from our recommended hotels is in Milpitas, across McCarthy Street from the Hilton Garden Inn.

  • If you're staying in the Milpitas area and looking for an oval to run intervals, this sand track will suffice. Four laps to a mile and bathrooms are located on the north end beyond the fence-line. After heavy rains, the surface will puddle and likely not be ideal conditions.

  • Decide whether you want to run, hike or ride up to (and we mean UP) Ed Levin Park or drive up to the trailheads and main park area. At the end of Calaveras Road in Milpitas, a pedestrian path meanders along the road and follows the mile plus climb. After it plateaus, look for a parking lot on the right and park entrance. Miles of trails, hundreds of greenspace acres and a lake are the park's best features (1500+ acres total).

  • If staying on or near campus and looking for a run venue uninterrupted by automobiles or traffic signals, consider the perimeter dirt trail around Santa Clara's open field. The large grassy area is located on the southeast side of campus, adjacent to El Camino Real as it curves. It's surrounded by chain-link fence so use the entry gate at the end of Bellomy Street/Accolti Way. We didn't measure, but our best guess is once around will accrue approximately a half-mile.

  • Breathtaking views of marshland with trails that slither between, the Baylands is one of those run routes where you can lose yourself in nature. 15 miles of trails offer plenty of twists, turns and nature views. As with all routes that head through dense greenscape or marshland, be aware/alert of your surroundings.

  • A dirt trail runs through this former landfill and joggers/walkers are treated to an unusual combination of open-space and garbage dump remnants. It's not our favorite run venue, but still an option for those searching for traffic-free routes.
