Fitting it in: How to Train in a 60 hour Workweek

The age-old question for any committed athlete, "when"?  It is NEVER EVER "IF". It is always when.

Successful executive age-groupers have figured out how to fit their training into a 60+ hour work week. What is the trick? We explored the topic years ago in this post, and we detailed a training plan for a Half Ironman Triathlon.

In addition to the right training plan, there are general tactics that successful executives use to make it work. And Andy Mouncey, a Professional Inspirational Speaker AND Ultramarathon Coach, nailed it in a recent LinkedIn Discussion. We love how succinct Andy is.

From Andy Mouncey:

In 12 years of working with busy execs who like their training I have noticed a few common trends:

  1. They know they're more productive (and nicer to be around) when they are training - so they make time to train and they make sure their PA gets that priority as well
  2. They delegate
  3. They get the key workout done before they get into the office
  4. They run/bike/walk all or part of the commute and they do stairs!
  5. They always have a training kit with them
  6. They work in a place that has showers/changing facilities
  7. They're cool with a 10-15 minute blast if that's all that's available
  8. Some days it just ain't possible - and they're cool with that as well
  9. They have great phone/contact time discipline
  10. Multi-sport interest and skills gives them greater workout options

Thanks Andy!! Learn more about Andy here.

It is this need for efficiency and convenience that drove us to start Athletic-Minded Traveler. We make sure that busy execs get the workout in even when away from home. And we identify other healthy options like places to eat, nearby grocery stores, and cool things to do.
