Far from its roots as a plantation and farming town, Atlanta's economy is now driven by corporate heavyweights like Coca-Cola, Delta, Home Depot, and UPS, all of which headquarter in the "Home of the Brave(s)." Blending deep southern tradition with all that is modern, Atlanta is known as the capital of the "New South." Transplants flock to what some describe as the "next great international city" to enjoy its temperate climate, cosmopolitan flair and job opportunities. As host of the 1996 Olympics, Atlanta solidified itself as a world-renowned city and simultaneously added the word "ya'll" into many vocabularies.
Contributing to Atlanta's character and universality is its rich African American history, exemplified by the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. whose birthplace in the revitalized Sweet Auburn neighborhood received the National Historic Landmark designation in 1976 and is now home to the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change.
