Des Moines River Path (John Pat Dorrian Trail

Pete Crivaro Park
Des Moines, IA

Area: Downtown

This run route path, also known as the John Pat Dorrian Trail, begins in the Pete Crivaro Park and runs for about 3.5 miles to Birdland Park and Marina, just north of downtown.  The flat and paved path parallels the river (veering away from it at times) and continues along Pennsylvania Ave. and Birdland Drive. This urban path will take you by the Des Moines Botanical Center, City Hall & the Simon Estes Ampitheater.  We always recommend using common sense when navigating a new route; run during the day and with a partner if possible.

For long-distance runners and cyclists, keep in mind that you can connect to the Neal Smith Trail at the northern endpoint of this route. 26 MORE miles await! The Neal Smith Trail is more secluded and wooded than the John Pat Dorrian Trail. It will take you through forests, by Saylorville Lake and end at Big Creek Lake.
