As the closest hotel property to downtown's YMCA, Embassy's location on the Des Moines River provides quick access to the Capitol, City Hall, the River running path and a worthy fitness center/lap pool. In typical Embassy fashion, its atrium-designed hotel offers 234 guest suites with separate living and sleeping areas, mini-refrigerators and microwave ovens. Though you can zap an afternoon snack or even dinner, Embassy takes care of your breakfast each morning with a complimentary cooked-to-order meal.
When it comes time to work off that free omelet and hashbrowns, Embassy's recently renovated hotel gym is worth your sweat equity. All of the machines are Precor, with individual plasma televisions attached. Strength options are even better with a multigym and dumbbell set.
If you're in the mood to jog outdoors, head out the front door and run north along Ray Street (the street that runs along the river right in front of the hotel) and pick up the footpath on the left side of the street after about a quarter-mile.
Lap swimmers and those looking for more equipment can walk five minutes to the YMCA across the river. The $10 admission fee is a no-brainer.
