The Henry is near the top of metropolitan Detroit's hotel food chain. For some reason, finding a true luxury property in the Motor City is as difficult as locating a mint condition '53 Corvette. Owned by Marriott, this property has everything you have grown to love about this brand of hotels. The 308 rooms are suited up in shades of cream and brown, sport marble baths, afford premium feather bedding and provide free WiFi. The plain and conservative décor may disappoint those accustomed to more upscale trappings.
The hotel has upgraded its fitness room to include several new machines, but the room remains dark and space constrained. Precor is the name of the workout game here. Three of Henry's stack-loaded weight stations are leg apparatus, and an ab bench can help with the six-pack.
Those wanting more cardio or strength can walk a half-mile to the Fairlane Club ($15) or drive 1.5 miles to the Ford Community Center ($12). Both are great alternatives, so let your budget and commute dictate your exercise fate.
Henry's on-site 40-foot indoor shorty is nowhere near lap length. Swimmers planning to accrue real yardage must consider off-site options, as there are two. During the summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day), the nearby Fairlane Club's appealing 3-lane, 25-yard outdoor option is open for your business, and the Ford Community Center's wonderful 6-lane, 25-yard water box is available year round.
Note: Fairlane also has an indoor pool, but it's another shorty at 50 feet (17 yards).
