In the heart of downtown Birmingham, Townsend is one of the most lavish accommodations in metropolitan Detroit. This quaint suburb's upscale shops and cafes are the Townsend's neighbors, and Oakland County's corporate community is a short drive away.
The hotel exterior appears modern with its brown brick façade and large windows, but setting foot inside brings you to the 19th Century. All 150 rooms were renovated in the summer of 2016. They still feature old world charm, Victorian style and luxurious furnishings. Egyptian cotton sheets, 24-hour room service, and marble tubs, as well as 49" flat-screen LCD TVs, free WiFi, and Fresh Amenity Collection luxury bath amenities.
Another part of the facelift was the hotel gym - new cardio pieces fill the 1100 square-foot fitness facility, including Life Fitness treadmills, Precor and Life Fitness recumbent and stationary bikes, as well as Life Fitness stair climber and ellipiticals. They've also added Cybex resistance training equipment to round out the workout experience. This was a welcome change for frequent guests of The Townsend, as previous reviews of the fitness center weren't flattering.
For athletic-minded travelers wanting to invest in a longer and more full-service workout, several options are available. Powerhouse Gym is a 5-minute walk with $15 access to Townsend guests. Those willing to drive 5 minutes can treat themselves either the larger and more exclusive Beverly Hills Club ($25/day or $35/week) or LA Fitness ($15/week).
Lap swimmers must look to Beverly Hills since Powerhouse has no pool.
