Despite it's highly "commercial" flavor, Yoga Shelter in Gross Pointe is a convenient option for individuals staying downtown. The vibe here is trendy and evokes a sort of "see and be seen" energy, though it is far from pretentious. The studio is located about 10 miles from our featured downtown hotels, in the Kercheval Place shopping center above Trader Joe's. Free parking is available in the shopping center parking deck.
A single class is $17, mat rental is $2 and towel rentals are $1 each. Water and other refreshments are available for around $2-$4.
Call the studio or check their website for more detailed information and class times. Otherwise there are typically 4-6 classes offered each day. Most weekday classes at this studio begin at 9a. On weekends it's 7:30a on Saturday and 8:30a on Sunday. The latest class begins at 8:30p during the week.
ABOUT THE YOGA
Yoga Shelter offers a variety of classes for all levels and abilities. Specializing in vinyasa yoga, also known as "power yoga," the classes focus on strength, balance and connecting movements with breath. "Shelter Strong" is the signature class and the room is heated to approximately 87 degrees. "Shelter Synergy" is also heated (85) and is a fusion class blending vinyasa with longer hold poses. "Shelter Steady" (85F) is slower yet with a focus on endurance. The "Shelter Still" class is Yin Yoga and is not overly heated (73F). It's a gentle, slow moving, class. There are a few other class types offered. Visit the website to learn more.
