It is surprisingly difficult to find health clubs in downtown Frankfurt that offer out-of-towners day pass admission. It seems that gyms assume you will workout at the hotel, but hotels often fall short - even in Germany. Mainhattan is a good find. In addition to two Fitness First clubs located in the city's heart, no other health club offers out-of-towners "day pass" admission.
Mainhattan is an independently-owned gym with a friendly, neighborhood vibe. Guests of the Savigny hotel receive complimentary admission. All others can sweat here for a reasonable €19 fee. The fitness center is most convenient for travelers staying near Messe, the Fairgrounds, and the University. Inside, expect to find two levels of workout options. The loft-like rooms are small, yet bright and cheery. We counted approximately 10 treadmills, 6 ellipticals, 4 upright bikes, all Technogym brand. About 20 Nautilus Nitro machines are also arranged throughout the first level space as well as Hammer Strength free weight equipment. An additional strength area is located upstairs with Technogym machines and Life Fitness computerized muscle pump equipment. Spin and aerobics classes are included in your admission fee.
Like many health clubs in Europe, there appears to be a slight gay population here, so men not used to being checked out by other men should be prepared. It's a compliment! Note: Towels are provided and a coffee bar is on-site.
