This Hilton's neighborhood is noticeably different from the tourist-lined streets of Mayfair, Trafalgar Square and Kensington. Middle Eastern folk walk the sidewalks and scents of kebabs and shawarma leak from the family-owned restaurants. The hotel itself is massive, topping 1,000 rooms, making it a popular choice for the conference/convention circuit. Book a room on the Executive Floor for a more personalized experience. Your accommodations will be somewhat more appealing too, more upscale décor, better views, etc.

Metropole's second floor gym is a mediocre combination of first class machinery inside a worn and cramped room. A higher ceiling and more natural light would significantly help the ambiance. Fortunately, the Precor cardio equipment and Cybex weight stations will satisfy most sweaters. Dumbbells and a rower are also in stock.

Swimmers can bring their Speedos as Metropole's 15-yard (14 meter) rectangle pool does have a rope stretched from side to side. The short length may force more flip-turns than desired, but lappers are hard to come by in London.

In addition to the treadmills, runners should also consider a jog along Hyde Park's paths. Since Metropole is not as close as our other recommended Mayfair/Hyde Park hotels, you'll have to endure 5-10 minutes of jogging on the sidewalk before your arrival. But once inside Hyde you'll be glad you came.

A Marks & Spencer department store is located across the street for all of your grocery and/or prepared meals needs.
