Silver Library Hotel

299 Madison Avenue
New York, NY 10017
800-480-9545websitePrice: Moderately Expensive
Area: Midtown

This boutique hotel (60 rooms) showers guests with phenomenal customer service and a bunch of freebie perks, including WiFi, bottled water, continental breakfast, a 3-hour evening wine and cheese reception, nightly turndown service with a chocolate, and round-the-clock hot drinks and snacks. Guests do pay a "resort fee" for the largesse, but we like that the Library is upfront about the charge and its value.

Guest quarters are upscale, uplifting and unique, each outfitted with individual art and book collections. All rooms have windows (some with views), self-controlled AC and the hotel's size keeps things relatively quiet. Keep in mind, this is a small building and a small hotel so accomodations are tiny, even by Manhattan standards. Also, there are varying bed sizes --  full, queen, king. Make sure you book accordingly.

The Library is much too small for an onsite gym, but management has smartly negotiated complimentary access for all guests to the New York Sports Club on 36th & Madison (5-minute walk). Pick up a pass from the front desk and bring your photo ID to the health club. NYSC's are sprinkled all over Manhattan and have the reputation of being a very average workout chain. This particular location is better than others with plenty of cardio and strength equipment to satsify all athletic-minded travelers.

Joggers should head to Central Park's meandering paths.

Swimmers must look to our off-site pools as neither The Library nor NYSC sport a water box.
