Silver Waldorf Astoria New York City (CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS)

301 Park Avenue
New York, NY 10022
212-355-3000websitePrice: Expensive
Area: Midtown

The Waldorf Astoria is likely the most famous hotel in all of New York. Walking through the ornate lobby makes one wish the walls could talk and share stories of the famous and infamous that have enjoyed its hospitality over the last 100+ years.

Fortunately, the property has undergone a few renovations since its 1893 opening. The mature character and ambiance of this old grand dame has been meticulously preserved. Patrons receive the best of both worlds: modern technology and convenience along with 19th century allure.

Remember this is New York, so the room sizes will be much smaller than usual, especially at historic hotels like the Waldorf where standard quarters measure in at a very cozy 200-225 square feet. Despite their diminutive size, all 1,245 rooms are tastefully decorated with accents of yesteryear. Some wear/tear is noticeable in some abodes so keep your expectations in check. High-speed internet is available for a fee, but if you just want to check your email and have a wireless card, head to the lobby where your computer should have no problem picking up the complimentary wireless signal.

There are two gyms at the Waldorf, one serving the more expensive rooms in the Tower and one for the main building. The Tower fitness center is next to the Guerlain Spa on the 19th floor.  The other gym is located on the 5th floor. Only the Tower's fitness center is complimentary to guests. Access to the 5th floor gym will cost $15 UNLESS you are a Hilton Honors member. Then it is gratis! Both gyms are open 24 hours. For this hotel's largesse, the 5th floor gym may be somewhat undersized but there's quality treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes on-site, along with rarely seen free weights for bench press, arm curls, and other exercises. We wouldn't be surprised if you had to wait for a favorite piece of equipment, especially during the morning rush. The Tower gym is simillar in terms of equipment, but more upscale in decor.

No pool at the Waldorf, so swimmers will want to look to our off site "Work Out" options.

Joggers should consider a jaunt through Central Park.
