Yoga Factory (Lawrenceville)

3418 Penn Ave.
Pittsburgh, PA 15201
Area: Downtown

In terms of vibe, this Lawrenceville District studio is pretty laid back and upscale for a Bikram studio. Look for the entrance at the side of the building that is on Penn across from the statue. Happily, there should be plenty of parking. The practice space is carpet free with a special floor that "gives". This is a larger studio with a welcoming lobby and other nice touches. There are locker-rooms that have multiple showers.

The studio sells water and rents mats and towels ($2 each).  A drop-in class is $20 and includes a mat and towel.  Those who will be in the area longer can take advantage of the "Out of Towner" special: $60 for 7 days of yoga including mat and towel.

The Yoga Factory primarily offers the 90 minute Bikram series which they call "Bikram Method" on the site. There is also a 75 minute version offered along with a Vinyasa fusion style class. Also 45 minute HIT classes are offered. Always check the website to confirm or call; but typically 50 classes are offered each week with the earliest beginning at 6a and the latest at 8p.

Bikram Yoga welcomes beginners. This 90 minute class consists of 26 beginning postures and is conducted in a hot room (approx. 110 degrees) with, hopefully, high humidity. But don’t be fooled into thinking beginning means easy – it doesn't! Iron men and couch potatoes, alike, have found themselves floored in “dead man’s pose” just minutes into this challenging workout. You don’t have to be strong or flexible or in excellent shape to do this yoga – you simply have to be willing. What we also really like about Bikram’s is that every studio teaches the same sequence of postures so you always know you’re going to get a full-body workout—a great benefit for travelers.
