How could we not list the 2006 Stanley Cup Champions? RBC Center hosts home games from October through, well, June if the team advances throughout the playoffs.

A beautiful course that is meticulously maintained, Duke's course is located in Washington Duke Inn's backyard. Rees Jones redesigned and revived this course in the late 90's. It has played host to the NCAA Golf Championship in 2001.

AAA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Durham Bulls typically field a competitive team with Major League prospects. The team has moved into a new stadium since the popular movie "Bull Durham" was filmed. But this 21st century athletic center is a gem.

A Tom Kite designed course, the Eagle Ridge course rolls through some great hilly countryside and scenery. Heavy hitters may want to play from the "tips" as the white tees top out at 6300 yards.

While the park offers boating, hiking, picnicking and fishing (no swimming), we think mountain biking is the best bet. The park is open 7 days a week and because it's pretty close to both downtowns, it can get crowded.

Lake Johnson is located near the NCSU campus and offers aquatic activities like fishing, swimming, and boating. The lake is surrounded by a two-mile asphalt walking trail. Along with the 50 meter indoor lapper, the 65 acre Pullen Park also houses North Carolina's largest community theatre. The in-door, air conditioned space accommodates 250 and is open year-round.

One of the more conveniently located courses to the Research Triangle, Wildwood Green is not the most difficult course around, but its inexpensive greens fees and proximity make it a course worth considering.

Umstead Park is a state treasure trove of 5,577 untouched acres, 3 lakes, 22 miles of hiking trails, and 13 miles of mountain bike/horse riding paths. The park has two entrances, one off I-70 and another at the Harrison Ave. exit off I-40.
