Located just across the street from Blue Devil campus, this upscale country club-like hotel and golf destination is a favorite of undergrad's parents, visiting faculty, and anyone with business in/around Durham. If you plan to spend several days in the Raleigh/Durham area and think you'll have some free time for golf and attending university sporting events, seriously consider booking a room here. But, if your business is in the Research Triangle and you're in town for only a day, the 10+ mile drive may be a bit much.
Washington Duke is a rare breed. First, we thank WDI for an entirely smoke-free environment. This attribute is especially impressive since North Carolina is one of America's top producing tobacco states. The unique property's 271 rooms and suites are all decorated in a charming, down home style, and outfitted with modern conveniences such as complimentary WiFi. We suggest requesting a room that overlooks the golf course, the views on the opposite side are of the parking lot.
Athletic-minded travelers have a wealth of sporty options from which to choose. The most obvious is Duke University's 18-hole championship golf course in the hotel's back yard. The greens and fairways are meticulously maintained to provide a challenging yet beautiful experience, this course was the host of the 2001 Men's NCAA championship.
For your daily exercise, consider several options. The on-site fitness center is a bright, open, and airy room with plenty of natural light and tip top machinery. Life Fitness is the equipment brand of choice and the supply of new apparatus is sufficient for a moderately sized accommodation like WDI. If we could request one addition to the room it would be a set of dumbbells since none is supplied. If you want the full-service health club experience, consider the Levin JCC. $10/day is the fee, but you're limited to three days. Not bad for a long weekend.
Runners can forego the treadmill experience in lieu of two wonderful outdoor jogging options. The Al Buehler Trail meanders past WDI's front entrance and Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium, home to Duke's runners and throwers, is a short 5 to 10-minute warm up jog away. Choose either with confidence.
Swimmers will have to cross-train as WDI's outdoor pool is not a lapper. Levin JCC has a great outdoor lap pool or, you can get in the car and drive 10 minutes to the Campus Hills Pool.
