Site of the XTERRA course and often cited as the best urban trail in the southeast, the single-track trails along the banks of the St. James River are phenomenal. Trailheads can be found throughout the 7.5-mile loop and out/backs are of course possible for those not wanting the full challenge.

Stretching 1.25 miles from 5th to 17th streets, the Canal Walk provides an outdoor strolling route with a bit of history--signs along the way offer historical tidbits about the city, etc.

Okay, it's not really a park, but as the burial place for Confederate soldiers, Jefferson Davis, James Monroe and John Tylery, Hollywood Cemetary is a unique venue for a walk or jog. Meandering paved roads make the surface easy to navigate.

Swimming during the hot summer days, canoeing and kayaking year round, even white-water rafting when the water level is high--all of these fresh water pursuits are favorite activities for local Richmonders.

THE place in Richmond-metro for rock climbing, both indoor and if you want an outdoor guide. The Manchester Climbing Wall is a popular spot for climbers desiring a natural element venue that's convenient to downtown. But, Peak boasts a fantastic indoor, man-made climbing venue as well.

Located about 20 miles from downtown Richmond, Pocahontas State Park is a popular destination for campers, hikers, mountain bikers, swimmers, and those who enjoy fishing. Bridle trails are here as well, but you need to bring your own horse--no rental stables on-site.

Often cited as one of Richmond's top public golf courses, River's Bend is a short commute from downtown and offers a quality golf experience for reasonable rates.

Most people know what Segways are nowadays and many tour operators are popping up in major cities throughout the U.S. Richmond is no exception. If you want to tour the city via motorized means rather than on foot, this place can make it happen. Two-and-a-half hour tour for $65.

Shokhoe Slip and Shokhoe Bottom are quaint subdivisions of downtown Richmond--this is where all of the action is most nights of the week, But it REALLY revs up Thursday-Saturday. Bars, clubs, small music venues, restaurants--it's all here.
