Set in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains, this recently renovated 395-room resort is a wonderful retreat for athletes and non-athletes alike. The 93-acre property is breathtaking, and the workout options are endless. The mauve and sage guest rooms are tastefully decorated and loaded with every convenience. Twenty-four hour room service, high thread count sheets, and private balconies are pleasures you will enjoy at this Loews. Although amenities like these will tempt you to remain inside, what awaits beyond your door will make fitness fanatics even happier.
A short stroll from the hotel lobby brings you to the Loews Spa reception desk and the starting point for all things aerobic. Although Loews commits a pet peeve by charging guests $10/day for use of the fitness center, we can swallow the tack-on a little easier knowing the gym is top-of-the-line. Inside the 7,000 square-foot facility, athletes will be delighted by an impressive number of modern cardio machines, useful weight stations, and plenty of free weights. The equipment is dispersed in an ergonomic fashion throughout the pleasantly designed room. Classes are offered as well, so those wanting a little group therapy can join in the fun.
Just outside the fitness center is the resort's 18-yard x 3-lane lap pool. Kickboards and pull-buoys are provided, and unlike the fitness center, freestyling is free. While only one lane is separated with a floating line, the other 2 are adequately marked with regulation stripes on the pool's bottom. Unfortunately, the length is a little short, but here is a tip, the neighboring Wyndham Lodge at Ventana Canyon sports a fantastic 8x25-yard competition pool. Loews guests can access this pool by contacting Wyndham's guest services department; or just show up in your Speedo and tell the attendant you were informed you could come for a dip. Who could refuse?
Runners will be amazed by the beautiful desert country and are treated to a short, on-property trail. The meandering path is a little curvy for our taste, so we recommend heading down Loews' driveway and logging any major miles along Kolb Street. A good mix of hills will heat up your desert jaunt.
Note: The resort has 2 Tom Fazio designed golf courses.
