Golf is clearly the focus (27 PGA Tour level holes) of this Spanish hacienda-style resort, so we were pleasantly surprised by the additional recreational opportunities available to guests. On the grounds beyond the tastefully decorated, but rather plain accommodations, Omni provides lighted tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, 2-outdoor heated pools, and a full-service spa and fitness center. Phase One of a multi-million dollar multi-phase renovation is complete, and the Mountain Vista guest rooms are the recipient of complete upgrades. Look for the rest of the guest rooms to be done within a year, as well as other amenities around the resort.
The exercise facility is much smaller than those listed above, but Omni capitalizes on the available space with its recently purchased cardio and weight equipment. In an area the size of a standard hotel room, Omni supplies workout hounds with 10 stack-loaded weight machines, good condition Precor ellipticals, and Cybex recumbent bikes. Unfortunately, cycling nuts are forced to recline, but those intent on a traditional ride can hit the nearby roads and trails (more pavement than dirt) on a rental mountain bike.
Swimmers will be content, not thrilled, with the lap swim area, an undivided portion of the main pool. To keep you going straight, the lap swimming section is marked by two 25-yard bottom stripes without floating lines. Logging your 3,000 yards in the morning before the kids arrive is your best bet for solitary strokes.
Runners can obtain a jogging map from the concierge or head out on your own to discover the desert's delights.
Depending on the days of your travel plans, you can book the Omni at budget pricing. However, if the cost here is anywhere near the Loews or Westin (it often is) choose one of these two in an elevated heartbeat.
