Similar to the Omni, Westward's room rates vary significantly by season. During the "high" months of February and March, prices can exceed $200/night. But come June, the cost consistently idles under three figures! We like the Westward but not enough to recommend it at $150-$200/night. So keep this in mind when looking and booking.
Of all the places we visited in Tucson, Westward reminded us the most of an old world southwest ranch. The owners have embraced the property's historic heritage by maintaining the 1912 home site. In fact, the original living room is still located off the hotel's lobby, and much of the retreat's adobe style is inspired by the native homestead. The suite-size guestrooms, clustered throughout the 80 acre grounds, offer seclusion in a natural habitat. All have a private balcony or patio and some an outdoor hot tub.
Contributing to the resort's ranch character are its on-site stables which allow guests to explore the countryside on horseback. Of course, the dirt trails also make for a nice hike (too curvy and not long enough for most joggers). Away from the main pool and on the far end of the property, the fitness center and lap pool await exercisers. Privacy and seclusion are this area's most appealing features, but a decent workout is possible here, nonetheless. The 5-lane x 20-yard lap pool, complete with floating and bottom lines, is the more desirable fitness option, we just wish it were 5-yards longer.
Inside the tiny exercise area, athletes can sweat using the small number of mixed quality cardio machines. The atmosphere and quantity of machines are passable. The treadmills, steppers and ellipticals will raise the metabolism, but those looking to pump iron are left out in the desert heat with Westward's weak dumbbell selection and tired multi-gym.
Runners must get a little creative. The on-property trails are short and twisty, and the nearby road (Ina St.) can get busy with traffic. Those accruing more mileage will find themselves running past the urban congestion and into the desert calm. Ask hotel staff for suggested routes. Spa services are offered at this property's wellness center, with some aerobic and yoga options, too.
Westward rents out some road bikes for guest use, but not just any road bike: Cervelo road bikes! The costs run from $50 (2 hours), $60 (full day), $100 (two days), $125 (three days) or $200 (week). Sizes and availability vary, so call ahead before shipping your steed. It might be cheaper to rent a Cervelo!
