A Cure for Cold, Aching, Hurting Knees and Joints

With the recent time change, my 630am bike rides have become somewhat colder. Keeping my upper body warm is easy--layers, arm warmers, etc.--but until recently I struggled to keep my legs warm, especially during the first 30 minutes of the ride.

The crisp morning air would pierce into my knees and create stiffness and an annoying (not severe) amount of knee pain. I tried wearing leg warmers, which are helpful for those bitter cold winter days, but I find them restrictive and too warm after 30 minutes in the saddle when the temps are above 45F.

White Christmas - The Only Way to Go

Growing up in Chicago, my family often vacationed over Christmas to the ski resorts of the West. Winter Park, Colorado, was one of our favorite destinations. Vail, Steamboat, and Heavenly also found our travel calendar.

In-N-Out Burger is Overated

I don't often eat unhealthy meals, but when I do, I enjoy them. Burgers, fries, onion rings, and chocolate shakes are often part of my diet splurges. Yesterday, after a long-ish cycling ride, I was in the mood for one of these meal treats and decided upon In-N-Out Burger--my usual order...two hamburgers with ketchup and mustard instead of the "spread" and grilled onions, and an order of french fries.

Easy Velib Bike Rentals in Paris

Now that Paris has gone live on AMT, we're excited to share some of the athletic-minded opportunities we discovered.

In July 2007, Paris began a public bike rental program ("Velib") that makes cruiser bikes available to anyone wanting to ride. More than 20,000 bikes and 1,450 self-service stations are spread across the city.  Rental is easy and if you get your bike back into another rack (or the same) within the first 30 minutes, there's no charge!

And you like to add "stuff" to it, keep reading. (However, if, like my dad, you take it black, most of this post will be meaningless to you--except possibly the tip on Vietnamese cinnamon.)

Great Sweat Songs

In the spirit of the Grammy Awards--what a fantastic show that was last Sunday night (no lip-synching, no gratuitous profanity/nudity, etc.)--we thought it would be fun to nominate a few of our favorite sweat tunes.

What makes a good workout song in our view? It must be motivating (slow tunes put us to sleep). It cannot be too long (6 minutes or more of any song is overkill). And, it has to be clean (profanity first thing in the a.m.
