Are you a healthy parent? Do you encourage healthy living for your child? INTRO

There is no easy answer to this question; but there are two ways to try:
1. Be a positive role model for your children.
2. Educate your child about healthy living.

So what is healthy living? While I'd really like to rattle off a nice, succinct definition, I can't come up with one. It's too complicated! In my mind there are four general ways to think about healthy living:

Food
Exercise
Sleep
Way of Life

We will explore each of these in four parts over the next week.

Food companies are getting smart about healthy eating.

The two BEST pieces of advice for getting healthy?

1. Exercise first thing in the morning. If you miss some sleep, so be it. Studies prove that morning movers stick to their workout routines, get better sleep, and have an easier time staying healthy the rest of the day.

A Healthy New Year Resolution: Kicking TV to the Curb

According to a 2009 Nielsen Report, Americans' television watching is at an all-time high...151 hours per month (21 hours per week or 3hrs/day).

This fact is especially disppointing since the quality of television programming has certainly diminished. Does it really improve your life to know who won Dancing with the Stars?

No More H1N1 Shot Vaccine in San Diego - For Now

Just returned from two San Diego county health locations--attempting to get the H1N1 flu shot for my daughter. Shots are no longer being given to kids due to short supply--only to pregnant women. A few of the live-virus, nasal sprays are left, but not many. No information as to when the next shipment of shots will arrive.

Kombucha. The original probiotic source and new superfood?

Kombucha. Kom-Bu-What? It's a fermented tea sold in many stores that has garnered a very loyal following. If you are a kombucha newbie, ask around your organic or ?foodie? circles, and they?ll likely sing the praises of this wonder beverage. Kombucha (kom-BOO-cha), has been called ?the tea of immortality" for thousands of years! And at a very reasonable 30 calories per 8 oz (2 grams sugar), it won't break the nutritional bank!

WHAT IS IT?

SIGG Update. How to exchange your bottles and get a Camelbak freebie.

We recently posted about the brouhaha regarding SIGG water bottles and the potential for BPA leakage from the bottles' liners. We've also recently posted about plastics and guidelines for understanding the risks.

ONLY bottles manufactured before August 2008 are affected.

SIGG water bottles not so safe afterall? Liners contain BPA.

September 6, 2009: Athletic-Minded Traveler has posted an update to the SIGG water bottle fiasco. Click here for details on how to exchange the affected bottles and possibly get a FREE Camelbak bottle.

I just read that the liner inside all SIGG aluminum water bottles sold before August 2008 contain a small amount of BPA -- the chemical consumers are trying to avoid by buying NON plastic bottles.
