Food companies are getting smart about healthy eating.

The two BEST pieces of advice for getting healthy?

1. Exercise first thing in the morning. If you miss some sleep, so be it. Studies prove that morning movers stick to their workout routines, get better sleep, and have an easier time staying healthy the rest of the day.

A Healthy New Year Resolution: Kicking TV to the Curb

According to a 2009 Nielsen Report, Americans' television watching is at an all-time high...151 hours per month (21 hours per week or 3hrs/day).

This fact is especially disppointing since the quality of television programming has certainly diminished. Does it really improve your life to know who won Dancing with the Stars?

Internet shopping can save a ton on your favorite foods

I've mentioned this before, but if there are food staples that you use over and over, consider buying them online. I typically save 25% to 75%.

Examples:

1. Fiber One Cereal: Amazon price with free shipping: $4.42/box. Ouch! I just averaged $2.25/box by taking advantage of a 2 for $4.00 deal on Walgreens.com. That equates to a 49% savings. I did buy $50 worth of the cereal to take advantage of a promotion of $10 off any order of $50 or more. I now have 25 boxes of cereal on the way!

Some upside to holiday travel. Free Wi-Fi

If you are debating whether to bring your computer along on your next trip, do so. Online companies are getting into the holiday spirit by offering FREE WiFi at airports and on various flights.

GigaOm reported this morning that Google will provide free service on every Virgin America flight through the entire holiday season and it's giving away the ability to connect in 47 airports.

Not to be left out of the game, Microsoft will team with JiWire to offer free WiFi in various airports and hotels. But there is a catch.

Almond butter versus peanut butter. Which is the healthier choice?

Editor's Note: Lindsay Durston contributed this piece during her internship at Athletic-Minded Traveler. She aspires to be a travel writer.

While there is something deeply gratifying about the sweet, creaminess of peanut butter (unless you lean crunchy), and the way that it often sticks to the roof of the mouth, studies demonstrate, it might be time to switch the nut. Almond butter, which also comes creamy or crunchy, offers more on a strictly nutritional basis.

Energy Bars and Protein Shakes Can Cause Kidney Stones

Although my personal experience is a non-scientific study of ONE, consumers of protein shakes and energy bars should be aware that these convenient edibles can increase your risk for kidney disease and/or kidney stone formation (uric stones). There are more than one type of kidney stone. Some result from a build-up of calcium and most pass through our urine without us knowing. But, if they expand to sizes of 2-3mm or more, get ready for some mean back pain, potential fever, possible nausea and hematuria (blood in urine).

Exercising in the heat? Drink something cold to aid endurance.

I practice Bikram Yoga. Our teachers recommend that we do not bring in super cold water to sip on (or in my case chug) during class. They posit that digesting a very cold drink requires body energy -- energy that would better be used for the poses. According to a 2008 study, they are wrong.

Studies show that drinking a cold beverage before AND during exercise helps endurance in the heat!
