White Christmas - The Only Way to Go

Growing up in Chicago, my family often vacationed over Christmas to the ski resorts of the West. Winter Park, Colorado, was one of our favorite destinations. Vail, Steamboat, and Heavenly also found our travel calendar.

In-N-Out Burger is Overated

I don't often eat unhealthy meals, but when I do, I enjoy them. Burgers, fries, onion rings, and chocolate shakes are often part of my diet splurges. Yesterday, after a long-ish cycling ride, I was in the mood for one of these meal treats and decided upon In-N-Out Burger--my usual order...two hamburgers with ketchup and mustard instead of the "spread" and grilled onions, and an order of french fries. I ate in my car.

I know a lot of people who swear by In-N-Out, and I certainly don't dislike the high cal/low cost grub.

Mumbai Athletic-Minded Connections

One of my friends was in Mumbai for the Grand Opening of India's first Bikram Yoga studio. Bollywood stars and local dignitaries (along with approx. 25 American representatives) gathered at the Mumbai Marriott hotel for a 10pm Bikram Yoga demonstration and party to follow on Wednesday night.

Grenades exploded and guns were fired at the nearby domestic airport just as the yoga festivities began (airport shootings were not covered by the media).

Whole Foods strikes again. Another reason to shop at Trader Joes.

I'm befuddled. How can Whole Foods possibly justify charging 53% MORE for the EXACT same product that Trader Joe's sells? YES, THE EXACT SAME PRODUCT. Same packaging. Same flavor. Same Vendor. The Same.

The last time I complained, I wasn't as miffed. The product was slightly different in terms of the packaging and the Whole Foods price mark-up wasn't as shocking.

I love muffins. Wait, that's not entirely true. I love healthy muffins , ones that aren't loaded with sugar and oil.

Special K cereal - Cure for Restless Leg Syndrome and More?

Over the past few years (and after thousands of bike and run miles), I've battled with a mild case of Restless Leg Syndrome. Typically for me, it presents at night, when I'm in bed and just dozing off. Suddenly, this difficult to describe tingling/spasm feeling pierces my leg around the knee causing a jerky, unconscious reflex of my entire leg. Only my right leg is affected.

Beware of the Renegade Cop

This past weekend I was out on a group cycling ride that leaves from Nytro bike shop in Encinitas, CA. As our group of 35+ riders (a relatively small group due to the Fiesta Island Time Trials the next day) rolled out from the shop, we were immediately scolded by an irate San Diego County Sheriff officer from his patrol car.

Courthouse Blues

Yes, you may have guessed it, I have jury duty. My summons arrived two weeks ago and I admit that I was very tempted to dial the automated number and postpone.

But, I had no good reason to do so. Yes, I?m the primary care giver for our daughter and I work 20+ hours each week spreading the health and fitness ?love,? BUT I can spare 3-5 days. When it comes down to it, I truly believe jury duty is my civic duty.

So I packed my bag (lunch, thermos of Chai, computer, magazines, books) and headed out at 7:30 am.

Cycling Camradarie

This morning I set out on the Saturday morning Swami's ride --a 40-mile loop that heads east into rural San Diego County. Thanks to the Swamis Cycling Club team members and the customer-friendly new ownership at Nytro bike shop, this ride has become one of the most popular for local two-wheelers.

During the warm-up (first 10 miles), I struck up a conversation with a guy I had never met before. A typical conversation ensued--his name is Anthony, he works for SAP, a San Diegan for 20 years after moving from NJ, etc.

I learn something new each time I travel

You'd think that given the amount we (as The Team) travel, that we'd have things pretty much figured out, and there wouldn't be any surprises.

Think again.

1. Don't bring ice packs -- unless it's for medicine or breast milk

On our last trip to Chicago, we traveled as a family -- meaning our 2 year old was in tow. For the 4 hour plane ride I packed a cold case with her lunch and snacks, and to keep it all fresh I also included 2 ice packs. That was a no-no. Both ice packs were confiscated.
