Barry’s Bootcamp has serious competition from a Yoga Studio

From Yoga to Bootcamp

I workout religiously and I like routine. My “normal” 6 days a week sweat extravaganza includes a Hot Vinyasa Flow Class, and/or a Yoga Sculpt Class (heated Yoga combined with Weight Training and Cardio), and/or Barry’s Bootcamp, which is a combination of Cardio/Treadmill intervals with weight training etc. It works for me.

Top Ten Yoga Savasana Songs

Everyone has their "best of" song list for motivating a workout, but what about the wind-down? I love nothing more than falling asleep after a really hot, sweaty, and heart pounding yoga session during the savasana. Certain songs make it happen.

A Reprieve for Yoga Teacher Training Programs

In July of last year we reported that several states were attempting to regulate yoga teacher training programs. (Read the post here.)

Today, I New York State said "NO" to such efforts. Governor David Patterson exempted yoga teacher training programs from state regulations overseeing vocational training programs.

Why do we care?

Good news for personal trainers and yoga studios like CorePower

Core Defined

Today's Wall Street Journal article about the importance of core strength training hit home for me. I have been urging my husband to do more stretching and core strength training to help his posture, and this article offers support for my efforts.

Helpful Tips for your First Time at Bikram Yoga

My wife is an every day Bikram Yoga junkie. I prefer other forms of exercise and sweat, but after attending a half-dozen or so Bikram classes over the past 5 years, I feel qualified to pass along a beginner's perspective of what to expect, what to do, and what not to do at your first Bikram Yoga class: (*Click HERE to view all the cities we cover)

Exercising in the heat? Drink something cold to aid endurance.

I practice Bikram Yoga. Our teachers recommend that we do not bring in super cold water to sip on (or in my case chug) during class. They posit that digesting a very cold drink requires body energy -- energy that would better be used for the poses. According to a 2008 study, they are wrong.

Studies show that drinking a cold beverage before AND during exercise helps endurance in the heat!

Government regulation of yoga teacher training programs

Yes, you read the headline correctly.

State governments are starting to impose regulations on yoga teacher training programs. Since these programs are similar to other "vocational instruction" programs (e.g., truck driving, hair styling) states feel justified in charging licensing fees to operate. What does this mean? CASHOLA.

Strategies for cutting the cost of your yoga practice

We're all a bit more conscious of our spending habits lately, especially when it comes to "non-essential" items in the budget like dining out, shopping and vacations.

But what about the things that add personal value to our lives (and health!), even though they may not be necessary for our immediate survival?

Naked Bikram Yoga? Thank you but NO.

I was immediately uneasy today when I caught site of a man wearing a very thin WHITE yoga "costume." (In Bikram Yoga, the instructors often refer to one's yoga attire as a costume.) This 30-something, buff guy was positioned two rows behind me and a little to the right. But once the sweat started running, I could fully view his other "position!"

Seriously, what on earth could someone be thinking to wear an unlined, spandex like material in white?
