Like the name says, the food is a bit "fancy", but it is also really interesting and moves past typical upscale menu types. So many menus read the same. This place is different and there is a bounty of vegetables offered, which we always like. In terms of vibe and decor, there's nothing but warmth and welcome with wood vaulted ceilings, wood tables, a long bar, and modern light fixtures. It's sophisticated, but not uppity, very California. The name derives from the chef's mom, Ethel. She was a Japanese American, fabulous cook and "knew how to throw a heck of a party."
The menu changes often, but our examples will give you a sense of the experience. Highlights include the romano beans on the grill with a black currant shoya; shaved kohlrabi and pomegranate salad; warm sesame pancakes with halibut and avocado; kampachi crudo; caramelized arrowhead cabbage with wild mushrooms; salt and pepper Spanish octopus and buckwheat and kinako gnocchetti. Other more entree style dishes may include katsu-style swordfish, grilled black cod, and pork collar "Kakuni Style".
Dinner only Tues-Sat 5p-9p or 9:30p on Fridays and Saturdays
