Unrealistic Bike Policy at Southwest, Alaska & American Better

Ask a Southwest Airlines representative about the cost and size restrictions to check your bike on board and their first response likely will be, "I don't really know."

We know. We looked.

First is cost. $75 EACH WAY. So yes, you may have booked that non-refundable ticket and now you have another $150 add-on. In the old days, if your case met the size guidelines, it was free. BUT, the size guidelines were completely unrealistic, so you still had to pay up.

Mind, Body & Soul: Three Reasons to Experience a Sound Bath

The human mind is a powerful tool. It can create something out of nothing. Think about it. Nearly everything we encounter began with an idea in the mind. The value of keeping this tool, the mind, sharp cannot be understated.

Suicide should not be viewed as an option for solving problems. So why do many think it is?

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

Too often, I read or hear about another teenager who has died by suicide. While the faces of those who suffer are personal to each of us, (One of my best friends killed herself.), the feelings of loss and helplessness stemming from this epidemic are universal. I find myself asking “why” did this happen again? Why is it happening more often? You’ve read the stats. We’re talking about HUGE growth and Covid has made it worse.

Learn from my journey. Do you have thyroid disease?

Editor's Note: This is a special guest post from Maggie Hadleigh-West. Her byline is at the end of the article

21 is no fun.

I am barely 5"3", my hair is thin and straight, I have almost no hair on the outer thirds of my eyebrows.  I'm prone to being slightly overweight.  My palms are yellow, my fifth digit is shorter than it should be and tips of my fingers are purple-ish.  These are classic signs of an illness.

An Astonishing Obesity Fact

**Editor's Note: This post was edited in 2024.

Obesity is always a news topic in various forms, facts and figures.  But this fact, for some reason, made my jaw drop:

"86% of Americans are on their way to becoming obese by 2030." (Obesity, July 2008)

MBT, Reebok EasyTone, Skechers Shape Ups, Fit Flops. A Waste of Money?

Is it really any surprise that, according to recent research, the bevy of "toning shoes" don't deliver? No you won't suddenly achieve a muscular backside, burn extra calories, or "get into shape without setting foot in a gym."

And if you thought you would...well that is positive thinking.  I should know!  I'm on my fourth pair of MBTs!  Yep, I'm a devotee of the "toning" shoe. Some call them "rockers".

Schools take note: Put in a salad bar to help kids eat better

I love this little blurb that I read in the April 2010 issue of Cooking Light Magazine:

When UCLA researchers stuck salad bars in three elementary schools, they found that fruit and veggie consumption rose roughly 25 percent--a sign that poor eating habits at school may in part be the fault of poor selection, not resistance to fresh food.  Strikingly the healthy eating benefit persisted:  16 percent of total fruit and veggie consumption took place outside the lunch hour.

Perky Jerky? Energy boosts? Guarana.

The Wall Street Journal (March 2nd, 2010) had a very informative piece about guarana, a highly caffeinated plant from South American that is used in a variety of products such as energy drinks, dietary supplements, herbal tea, beef jerky, and candy.
